Primaned, a Dutch consulting firm specialised in project controls, has expanded into Southern Europe with the launch of a new office in Barcelona.

Established 40 years ago, Primaned helps project owners gain control over their programs and projects, ensuring that they are delivered on schedule, within budget, and aligned with strategic objectives. The specialist consulting firm focuses on projects in the built environment, spanning sectors such as construction, engineering, infrastructure, energy, and transportation.

From its base in the Netherlands, Primaned has over the years built an increasingly international client portfolio in countries such as Belgium, Germany and Spain, but its launch in Spain marks its inaugural international office.

Paul Vogels, the CEO of Primaned, said that the move comes in response to an established client base in Spain, and growing local demand for dedicated expertise in project controls. Unlike most major project management consultancies, Primaned focuses exclusively on projects controls, and is a certified partner of major software partners such as Oracle Primavera, PMWeb, and Safran Risk.

“The need for professional project insight is growing in Southern Europe,” said Vogels. “With our expertise, proven methodologies, and close collaboration with Oracle and other software partners, we look forward to contributing to the successful realisation of projects in Spain and the region.”

Building with risks to control

According to research from Capital Economics, Southern Europe countries such as Spain, Portugal and Italy are among the fastest growing markets for construction, spurred by economic growth, demand for housing, and end-of-lifecycle infrastructure in need of maintenance/replacement.

However, delivering engineering and construction projects is easier said than done – annual research from HKA shows that many face overruns in budget, schedule and/or quality. In Southern Europe, change of scope, poor project management and unskilled employees are the most common reasons for issues, said HKA, with a problematic number of projects down the line leading to claims and disputes.

In that regard, robust project controls are key, emphasized Vogels: “Project control is essential to manage and control complex projects. At Primaned, we bring a unique combination of consultancy, software, training, and data analytics to provide insight and structure to projects. That gives control and clarity – and ultimately peace of mind.”

The new Barcelona team (3 staff at launch) has hit the ground running, already working on multiple projects, including a large green ammonia transportation project, a project in the railway sector, and a project in Valencia focused on the construction of battery factories.

The launch in Barcelona comes after Primaned enlarged its partnership with Oracle. “We’ve been a consulting and implementation partner of Oracle since our inception and our expansion into Southern Europe comes as a logical step in supporting Oracle’s own growth strategy in the region.”
