McKinsey & Company appoints Holger Hürtgen as Distinguished Partner

Global strategy consulting firm McKinsey & Company has appointed Holger Hürtgen, a leader in its Düsseldorf office, as a Distinguished Partner – a select status reserved for individuals with exceptional impact and reputation.

A former teaching assistant and software developer, Hürtgen joined McKinsey & Company more than 19 years ago as the firm’s first data scientist in Germany, at a time when the work was, as he describes it, “essentially Excel on steroids.”

Today, he is recognised as one of the firm’s global leaders in advanced analytics and artificial intelligence (AI), spanning machine learning, generative AI and agentic AI. His client work focuses on commercial environments, with deep expertise in marketing and sales growth across customer-facing industries such as telecommunications, banking, ecommerce and retail.

Recent engagements led by Hürtgen include steering a large retail conglomerate’s tech-enabled transformation, building an at-scale analytics and technology academy, and launching multiple personalisation-at-scale programmes to enhance customer experience and lifetime value.

His work also includes designing a merchandising analytics optimisation programme for a global grocery company, focused on data-driven assortment and promotions, as well as developing a customised AI approach to transform chemical formulation processes at a German specialty chemicals firm.

Hürtgen is a member of QuantumBlack, McKinsey’s AI arm, and a lecturer at the firm’s Analytics Academy. He now steps into the role of Distinguished Partner.

Celebrating his appointment in a post on LinkedIn, McKinsey stated: “Holger is a pioneer in McKinsey’s most advanced technology work. A global expert on AI-powered growth, he is trusted by boards and CEOs – not to mention his McKinsey colleagues, who see him as both an extraordinary mentor and a technical coach down to the code level.”

Before joining the global consulting firm, Hürtgen served as a lecturer at a university in the United States and worked as a software developer and analytics consultant at a university in Germany.

Founded in 1926, McKinsey & Company is widely regarded as one of the world’s most prestigious management consulting firms. The privately held firm is led by roughly 2,600 partners, with only a very small number attaining Distinguished Partner status.
