Deloitte names Pieris Markou its new CEO for Cyprus
Pieris Markou, who has been interim CEO at Deloitte Cyprus since June last year, will now permanently fill the position – building on 25 years of experience with the Big Four accounting and advisory firm.
Markou is a chartered accountant – certified in England as well as Cyprus – and has been an integral member of the tax team at Deloitte Cyprus since joining in 1995. He was appointed partner in 2000, and was most recently the firm’s tax and legal services leader in Cyprus – as well as an executive board member at Deloitte Middle East.
He now takes over as CEO – a position he has filled temporarily since Christis Christoforou stepped down in June last year. Christoforou was a founding member of accounting firm Chrysanthou & Christoforou Arthur Andersen, and joined Deloitte when the two firms merged in 2002. He had been CEO since 2005.
Markou’s interim installation resulted from a June 2020 vote among Deloitte Cyprus’ 32 partners, who have now confirmed him as permanent CEO. He will lead a sizeable operation: Deloitte Cyprus boasts a 750-strong team – partners included – and is a part of Deloitte North South Europe.
Powering ahead
According to Markou, the firm’s strong presence on the island spanning 60 years bodes well for future growth in a highly competitive market. “By building on the solid foundations, the breadth of our people’s experience and expertise, as well as the knowhow of our global network, we will continue with our multidisciplinary activity in the market.”
“I am confident about the prospects and future success of Deloitte, as an employer of choice for new talents and first choice for clients, while at the same time continuing to make an impact that matters to our community. “
Part of this impact will be helping businesses through unprecedented challenges set up by the pandemic – and Markou appears up to the task. “I am taking on this new role at a time when markets across the world are faced with significant challenges due to the pandemic,” he said.
“However, working together with the partners and our people at Deloitte, we are ready to respond to any challenge and to continue playing a leading role in the economic developments of our region, by supporting companies, the economy and our community.”
