Eviden launches Digital Passport Solution for products and goods
Eviden has joined in a partnership with IOTA to launch the Digital Passport Solution, an innovative blockchain-enabled e-passport among the first of its kind on the market.
The main purpose of the Digital Passport Solution is to provide comprehensive data on products and goods across their lifecycle, enhancing transparency and traceability. This could add value to many different industries, including manufacturing, automotive, fashion and textiles, and food and beverage.
One use case that has already been brought to life is in the electric vehicle battery industry, where the Digital Passport is used to track the lifecycle, carbon footprint, and sustainability of automotive batteries.
“Together with IOTA, we are proud to launch our joint blockchain-based Digital Passport Solution, which is in full compliance with the EU legal framework,” said Udo Littke, head of Eviden in Central Europe. “It aims to bring the highest level of transparency to help consumers and businesses make informed choices when purchasing products.”
The digital passport is able to store detailed bits of data, including origin, materials, manufacturing, usage, and repairs that may have been made. This encourages sustainable production and consumption.
For consumers, the Digital Passport Solution can help them track the repair and maintenance process of their products. It also improves transparency in the purchasing decision process, shedding light on how a product’s life cycle impacts the environment, and providing better information on product safety and ethical considerations.
For businesses, the Digital Passport Solution can help enhance supply chain performance (improvement of risk management through precise knowledge of all supply chain components and production conditions), drive product innovation (use of detailed product data as a basis for the development of innovations), and sustainability (make greener decisions in procurement and manufacturing using deeper sustainability insights).
“A key goal is to lay the foundation for a circular economy, offering deep insights into every stage of the supply chain to support sustainable business models and facilitate the transition from a linear to a circular economic system,” said Littke.
While the Digital Passport Solution is currently focused on use cases in the three areas – electric vehicle batteries, product supply chain and digital media content – Eviden and IOTA said they plan to expand to other use cases.
“This is a long-term collaboration between Eviden and the IOTA and we will work closely together to explore further use cases in domains such as construction materials, textiles, and consumer electronics, among others,” said Dominik Schiener, co-founder and chair of IOTA.
IOTA is one of the most trusted blockchain projects and is specifically designed for applications having to do with the internet of things (IoT). IOTA is a fairly unique ledger technology because, unlike alternatives, it allows transactions to be parallel, boasts low resource requirements, and handles transactions really quickly.
