Nexio Projects shares lessons learned from its B Corp and EcoVadis recertification

International consultancy Nexio Projects recertified for both EcoVadis and B Corp certifications, two of the most prestigious sustainability certifications. There were a lot of lessons learned in this process, many of which can help other companies with their ESG goals. We discussed these recertification journeys with Cilia Keser, managing partner at Nexio Projects.
For Nexio Projects, sustainability is more than a service – it is also a practice. Having navigated both B Corp and EcoVadis recertification processes, the company has gleaned valuable insights into the complex process. These experiences underscore that certification is not a static achievement, but a dynamic process of continuous improvement.
B Corp recertification
Nexio Projects first achieved the B Corp certification in 2019, a first major recognition for the firm. But that was not the end of their sustainability journey, which requires continuous work. In 2023, it was time to apply for recertification.
The B Corp certification is awarded to businesses that hold high standards of verified performance, accountability, and transparency in an array of different ESG considerations. This positive impact is more than just a ‘nice to have’, but also helps to build trust with consumers, communities, and suppliers.
“Collaboration was essential to our recertification process,” notes Cilia. “Key team members took ownership of specific areas, ensuring a thorough and accurate assessment. In general, it is critical to have a well-established team where all team members can easily contribute and communicate effectively.”
Starting off the recertification process, Nexio Projects set a series of timelines and goals. Internal communications were kept clear from the outset between individuals responsible for specific parts of the plan, with a dedicated Slack channel keeping everyone up to date.
“Our experience has shown that even with meticulous planning, unexpected challenges are inevitable. The key to success lies in our ability to adapt swiftly and effectively. We adopted an agile approach to navigate these challenges, breaking down the recertification process into manageable sprints,” says Cilia.
This approach allowed the team to quickly switch tasks based on new information and continuously improve their approach. They organized short 'agile impact sprints' and held weekly meetings aimed at solving problems related with the B Corp recertification.
In the end, Nexio Projects was awarded a B Corp score of 117.9, significantly higher than the 80-point threshold for being awarded the certification. Particularly strong areas were governance, workers, community, environment, and customers.
“At Nexio Projects, B Corp recertification is more than just a tick-box exercise; it's a reflection of our core values and our commitment to using business as a force for good,” adds Cilia.
EcoVadis recertification
Nexio Projects was first awarded EcoVadis’ highest level certification, the Platinum status, in 2021. That saw the firm recognized among the top 1% of companies globally when it comes to ESG.
“Sustainability is a journey, not a destination. The EcoVadis assessment provides a structured framework for that journey, pushing us to continually improve and to truly understand the challenges our clients face,” notes Cilia.
The EcoVadis certification is reassessed yearly, with companies required to show a continuous commitment to accountability and ESG responsibility. Nexio Projects is eager to participate annually because the group prioritizes refining their ESG practices, ensuring accountability and transparency, and is dedicated to ‘walking the walk’.
Key to the process for Nexio Projects has been preparation: The team gives themselves plenty of time and uses a centralized data repository for all documentation. Team members are given specific roles to carry out in the scope of data collection, document preparation, and submissions reviews.
“Real-world projects rarely go as planned and overlapping priorities can create unexpected delays. We allocate an additional two weeks in our project timeline specifically for addressing last-minute changes or delays in document preparation or approvals,” says Cilia.
An ongoing commitment
For Nexio Projects, recertification is not a one-time event but a continuous cycle of reflection, learning, and improvement. By embracing transparency, collaboration, and adaptability, the firm strives to push the boundaries of sustainability and inspire other organizations to do the same.
Cilia: “For us, achieving certifications such as these are not the end goal, it’s part of an ongoing journey towards sustainability excellence.”
Nexio Projects encourages organizations to view certifications like B Corp and EcoVadis as opportunities for growth and positive change. Whether embarking on a first assessment or striving for higher ratings, every step forward counts. By sharing experiences, the firm hopes to inspire others to embrace the journey of continuous sustainability improvement.
