International management consulting firm Eden McCallum has released the 2023 edition of its Business Leaders Sustainability report, canvassing the views of around 250 leaders from companies across Europe. A round-up of the key findings in 7 charts.
While 80% of business leaders are concerned about the environment, their concern has notably dropped compared to the same survey conducted in 2021 – possibly as other issues such as the Ukraine war and inflation/interest rates have emerged.
According to business leaders, the government has the largest role to play in shaping the transition to a greener future. Corporates follow in second position.
In the private sector, 85% of organisations now has a sustainability policy in place and around two-thirds share their targets publicly.
Publicly listed companies are significantly more likely than private firms to have a sustainability policy and time-bound targets that are shared publicly.
Asked what is driving private sector organisations to develop and deliver environmental goals, the largest share of business leaders surveyed pointed at growing pressure from consumers. Employees follow in second place, with regulators ranking third.
Public companies are – not surprisingly – more likely to feel the pressure of external audiences than private companies, particularly from investors.
So how are companies driving their sustainability agenda? Eden McCallum’s study shows that companies’ efforts are widespread, but are particularly focused on using renewable energy and recycling.
About the study
For its study, Eden McCallum collected the views of around 250 business leaders, mostly from the United Kingdom and the Netherlands. Two thirds of respondents hold executive level roles at their organisation, with participating organisations operating across industries. The survey was conducted in January 2023.
