Sandvik collaborates with Xomnia to advance fleet analytics and reporting

Swedish engineering multinational Sandvik collaborated with Xomnia to help revolutionize the analytics and reporting of its global fleet operations.

The collaboration with the Dutch data and AI consultancy firm has resulted in a sophisticated reporting suite, providing Sandvik with better insights and more seamless support for parts and services for its worldwide fleet.

Sandvik is an engineering group providing products and solutions for mining and rock excavation, rock processing and metal cutting. With customers in around 150 countries, Sandvik has complex operations and a wide array of services and advanced equipment.

The challenge Sandvik was facing was to shift to a new version of their fleet reporting tool, Fleet Analytics. In order to do that, the Sandvik team had to master the new layout. Sandvik also needed to fully redeveloped and migrate its databases to a modern cloud infrastructure.

That migration however initially faced a number of challenges – the migration to the new data sources faced some technical hiccups, user confidence in the data was low, crucial features were missing, and the development backlog began piling up quickly.

Streamlining the change

In order to tackle these various issues, Sandvik brought in Xomnia to help the company with the process of implementing the changes. The work was delivered by Luis Lucchini, Analytics Engineer at Xomnia.

Lucchini first worked with Sandvik stakeholders on better understanding their requirements and roles in the fleet operations value chain. Having better understood the various roles and needs of the users, he was able to find the best solution.

“There are several types of users for fleet analytics at Sandvik, most of whom just need some quick insights to make business decisions,” said Lucchini. “Others are very data-driven and need to access very large amounts of data that can be overwhelming for almost everyone else.”

After the first research stage, the project resulted in a solution with various different parts: A semantic model and modernized data measures; a robust dashboard and a report layout that helps users build their own datasets; a data quality component that helps users pinpoint specific information; and version control, which enables collaboration and transitioning back to earlier working versions.

Now, Sandvik can deliver new reporting products quicker, meaning that teams can use data-driven insights to satisfy more customers. The data is also trustworthy because of extensive documentation. The new data model is in line with best practices and is fully compliant with data regulations.

With the new tools and way of working, Sandvik is now able to get much more out of their data, which makes reporting more streamlined and impactful.

“When we onboarded Xomnia, we had many unhappy users as they were missing functionality,” said Niek Van Zijl, head of Global Pricing & Commercial Analytics at Sandvik. “We have been able since to address many of those issues, significantly reducing our development backlog but also adding in many enhancements. Fleet analytics is now much more stable and is a platform that we can continue to build on.”

Sandvik’s reporting infrastructure continues to evolve, with monthly releases introducing new updates.
