Parkwind working with delaware on implementation of SAP S/4HANA system

Parkwind, an offshore wind energy company from Belgium, has kicked off a large ERP-transformation program, tapping delaware as its consulting partner.

Established in 2012, Parkwind is a company that finances, develops and operates offshore wind farms. The company currently has over 220 turbines in Belgium and Germany generating around 1.0 Gigawatt of capacity.

To help drive its international growth ambition, Parkwind’s management team recently decided to migrate its core IT infrastructure to a new ERP system: SAP S/4HANA. “Our windfarms are separate legal entities, on which we must be able to report in a consolidated manner. SAP S/4HANA provides a solid foundation for this,” said Joost Talloen, Head of Finance of Parkwind.

That need will going forward only become more important for Parkwind. In the summer of 2023, the Belgian energy company was fully acquired by Japanese counterpart JERA, and became part of its global renewable energy business known as JERA Nex. Under the wings of JERA Nex, Parkwind has accelerated its pipeline of new offshore wind projects to more than 4.5 Gigawatt, with farms set to launch in several new markets including the UK, Ireland, Norway, Taiwan and Japan.

Talloen said that SAP S/4HANA offers the technological fundament to “easily add new entities” to corporate financials, and will also smoothen the efforts needed to meet the legal, tax, and accounting requirements in relevant countries. “SAP has very strong multi-company and multi-country capabilities.”

“We also chose SAP because we were impressed by the fully integrated project accounting that SAP S/4HANA offers, and for the industry best practices the SAP team brings to its clients.”

The implementation

Guiding the implementation of SAP S/4HANA is delaware, which was selected by Parkwind following a competitive tender process. Also headquartered in Belgium, delaware is one of the world’s leading SAP consultancies, holding Platinum status for its consulting and implementation expertise.

Talloen said that delaware stood out for its “extensive experience with SAP S/4HANA and SAP Public Cloud”, “strong focus on energy and utilities”, and its “pragmatic, personal approach” which fits “perfectly” with Parkwind’s way of working.

The joint project kicked off earlier this year, with the implementation planned to be completed within six months. “Both delaware and Parkwind have a local and an international footprint. During each project, we collaborate with the client on a phased approach in which we can roll out SAP as efficiently as possible,” said Jan Van der Steen, partner in the Energy & Utilities practice of delaware.
