European management consulting firm Magnus Energy has unveiled its ambition to build its presence in the Nordics, bringing Søren Monbjerg Damsgaard on board to spearhead the new venture.

Hot on the heels of launching in the Belgian market, Magnus Energy is now eyeing its market entry into the Nordic energy market, with the new hub its sixth across its footprint.

Founded in 2008, Magnus Energy is headquartered in the Netherlands (two offices), with further bases in Germany, Austria, and Belgium alongside the Nordics. The firm is dedicated to the energy and power sector, offering advice around strategy, energy modelling and regulatory topics, and implementation support for major transformations and programs. Most of the firm’s 100-person team work on cross-border European projects.

Expanding on the Nordic launch, managing director Alexander van der Mark said that the firm has over the years already worked on many projects in the region, and is now setting up a base to meet client demand and provide more proximity to its clients and staff in the region.

“Establishing a hub in the Nordics is a next important step in our ambition to become a pan-European company supporting the energy transition with a broad range of services,” said Van der Mark. “I’m very happy that we’ve been able to bring in Søren to set up and build out the Nordic business.”

Building out the hub

Søren Monbjerg Damsgaard brings over 15 years of experience to the firm, gained both in industry and in consulting. An electrical engineer by background, he spent the first decade of his career at Danish transmission system operator Energinet, where he was a Senior Project Manager and Head of an IT department.

In 2021, Damsgaard started his journey as a consultant, among others working on digital transformation initiatives for customers such as Vestas (a provider of sustainable energy solutions) and at Nordic RCC (the Regional Coordination Centre for four electricity transmission system operators in the Nordics).

It was during his most recent project where he met Magnus Energy. “I served as the programme manager for the implementation of Day-Ahead Flow-Based Market Coupling in the Nordic region. It went live last year – a result of a successful cooperation between the Nordic TSOs, Nordic RCC, NEMOs, and other participants.”

Magnus Energy meanwhile has been involved with Europe’s Market Coupling transformation since the early days, supporting various projects and serving as the lead consultant at the Program Management Office level.

“When I encountered the team of Magnus Energy, I was pleased to see how much our ways of working and thinking aligned. The firm stands out with its deep domain and industry expertise, and approach of working shoulder to shoulder with customer with professionalism and integrity.”

In his first role with Magnus Energy, Damsgaard will continue his role as Project Manager for the Nordic Flow-Based implementation for the Intraday timeframe. Additionally, he will build out the client portfolio and team, with the aim to nestle the firm as a trusted player in the region’s energy consulting landscape.

“There are many exciting initiatives in the Nordic’s energy and power landscape. It’s my ambition is to solidify and expand Magnus Energy’s involvement in the region.”
